Vintage Blouse (S5645) and Tulip Tags

Last time I stopped in at Lakes Makerie, the lovely Sarah said she thought of me as "the White Shirt Lady," which is honestly one of the best compliments I've ever received. Now to live up to that prestigious title!

This vintage blouse was in-progress when my sister-in-law, Erin (@zimmer.made) birthday gifted me these wonderfully thoughtful tags featuring my personal tulip doodle! So it's the very first garment to get one.

Pattern
Vintage Simplicity 5645

If you've ever sewn from vintage patterns you know they are nice, but sometimes the details/construction are a little basic (for lack of a better term) in a way I'm currently finding hard to describe. On this pattern the button bands are maybe a little wide and I don't love the area where the collars meet and the button bands overlap. The collar itself is a little bulky and takes a bit of fiddling to situate, especially around the back of the neck. I'd maybe prefer the collar to sit flush against my back instead of having some height behind my neck, but I'm not terribly bothered.

You can see below that the collar is collapsing, which is the normal state! (Thanks to Josh for catching that so I could get a photo of it fixed, but this is more true to how it typically behaves)

Size
34" Bust

Fit Adjustments
Vintage Big 4 tops usually fit me just fine (other than length) so I didn't muslin and just held the paper pattern up against my torso to check the length. Decided to:
  • Shorten bodice by 2"
  • Shorten sleeves by 2"

After finishing I decided to add some simple tucks to the front and back for a little more shaping. All start 4" above the hem and are 4" long.
  • Two 1" tucks on the back (Centered between CF and Side Seam)
  • Two 1" tucks on the front (Centered between CB and Side Seam)

After these simple tweaks the fit is perfect! No changes next time.

Fabric
White Sandwashed Cotton from Blackbird Fabrics.
(Goes in and out of stock) My husband accurately described this as "like a dishtowel." It is like a dishtowel but in a nice vintagey way. It's pretty soft while also having good weight for a cotton. It'd make a good Archer Button Up (OMG so exciting)

Notions
Front Buttons: 18L White Pearl from Wawak
Sleeve Cuff Buttons: 16L White Pearl from Wawak

I really wanted to add either a vintage cherry or tulip applique, but felt they just didn't hold their own very well and looked like an afterthought. So now I have to figure out how to use them in another way because they are just too cute to sit around!

Finishing
Serged construction seams (side, underarm, armhole)
Hand stitched down the neck/button band facing
Hand stitched hem
