$3 Quilt Coat

$3 !!! quilt from the textile garage sale. Was organizing fabric and decided I'd rather store it as a quilt coat than in my stash. It's wasn't in the best of shape so I had some re-arranging of clumpy batting to do and some mending here and there.

Used the Deer and Doe Nenuphar (back gathered section omitted). This is one of my surprise favorite patterns — I think it's a lovely simple shape with great details, and set in sleeves which is a huge plus for me (as opposed to the meh drop sleeves that seem to be on every "simple" "modern" pattern these days).

This doesn't have any pockets right now, but I am considering adding welt pockets....

Process!

Can you spot the out of place blue triangle? I love it ❤️

My out-of-focus heavy duty Merchant and Mills shears worked great for cutting through thick layers.

Made it as long as possible. Thought this was going to end up a cropped jacket since this quilt was pretty small, about 5' x 6', but got a lot more out of it than I thought.

Laid all my pieces out and moved them around to test out different placement options.

Bound seams inside. Used some of the quilt top scraps again which are not cut on the bias, oh, the scandal. Accepting the wonky-ness of binding the armholes with it because this was about waste-not-want-not. Not my best construction work, but I think it fits the wrinkly quilt coat vibe.

I also appliqued an entirely new section over an area on the back that was predominantly white/cream. The quilt was in good shape there, but it was breaking the visual pattern of mainly blue/white triangles in a way I thought could be improved. The same thing is happening on one of the front shoulders but it doesn't bother me as much there.

You can see pins holding the new section in place while I stitch it. One of my fave handstitching tricks is holding my item up with a pants hanger/over the door hook. It supports the item and allows me to clip it in in a comfortable orientation for my stitching.

More general mending... Had to cut intact triangles of the same fabric from scraps to patch over big problem areas.

It also goes great with house slippers 😊
